Beach Guide: Cala Comtessa – Palma Bay’s Pine-Shaded Pocket of Calm

Just beyond Illetas, Cala Comtessa is a petite cove with fine sand, clear shallow water and a fringe of cooling pines. We love it for quick swims and low-effort beach hours when we don’t want to leave the Palma orbit.
From the Cathedral area, it’s roughly 20–25 minutes by car (about 12 km via Ma-1) and a short walk down to the sand. In summer, arrive early or come late—this is a local favourite.
📍 Location & Getting There
From Palma | Time | Notes |
Drive (Ma-1 → Illetas exit) | ~20–25 min | Limited street parking above the cove; mornings best. |
Bus (to Illetas, short walk) | ~30–40 min | Frequent city services; expect a short downhill approach. |
Taxi | ~€18–25 one-way | Handy off-peak; factor in summer traffic. |

🏖️ Beach Snapshot
Cala Comtessa is small and sheltered, with a sandy entry that stays shallow for several metres—great for easy swimming and gentle paddles. Seasonal lifeguard cover is typical on busy days, and a simple chiringuito serves cold drinks and snacks. Natural pine shade stretches across the back of the beach (bring a mat), while rocky sides hold the clearest water for snorkelling.
🧭 Practical Tips & Seasonality
- Street parking fills fast on summer weekends; shoulder seasons are breezier.
- Shade shifts by mid-afternoon—pack a light umbrella on windless days.
- Reef shoes help on the rocky edges where fish congregate.
- Calm mornings suit SUP; sea-breeze chop builds after lunch.
🏛️ Things to Do at Cala Comtessa
🏊 Unwind in clear, shallow water
The bay shelves gently and usually stays calm—ideal for relaxed swims and kid-friendly paddling (eyes on little ones near the rocks).
🤿 Snorkel the rocky shoulders
On bright days, the headlands hold fish and the clearest visibility. Stay inside the bay and watch for boat traffic beyond the line of buoys.
🧘 Pine-shade siesta
Stake out a spot beneath the trees for midday heat. Keep the grove tidy—carry out everything you carry in.
🚶 Mini cove-hop
Follow the coastal path to the neighbouring Illetas beaches (main Illetas and Cala Xinxell) for a change of scene without moving the car.
🍴 Where to Eat & Drink
On the sand, the seasonal chiringuito covers the basics. For a fuller meal, wander up into Illetas or over to Cas Català for seafood terraces and tapas. If you’re making an evening of it, we pair a sunset swim with dinner around Puerto Portals.

🌴 Lifestyle & Vibe
Cala Comtessa is intimate and unflashy: families early, couples and locals through the afternoon, golden light under the pines as the day cools. It’s a softer alternative to Palma’s urban strands—close enough for a spontaneous dip, pretty enough to linger.
